A Shostakovich Festival

A Shostakovich Festival

Friends of Chamber Music (FOCM)

[Official Website]

Featuring the complete string quartets of Shostakovich in four concerts, performed by the Jerusalem Quartet.
Dmitri Shostakovich, one of the most celebrated composers of the 20th century, exemplifies the turbulent career of an artist under a totalitarian regime. While his symphonies represented his public persona, it was in his 15 string quartets that he was able to express his innermost thoughts and feelings. Portland audiences will experience the wit, irony, and passion of these quartets in four concerts performed by the fiery Jerusalem Quartet, and a host of other activities.
The Jerusalem Quartet, hailed by The Strad as "one of the young, yet great quartets of our time," has garnered international acclaim for its rare combination of passion and precision. Their recording of Shostakovich quartets was selected as BBC Music Magazine's top pick in the chamber music category at its 2007 Award Ceremony.
